and capturing between 6 and 7 steps on the creation of each painting,
and writing the entire book 95 pages, entirely in color
the publishing company
refused to pay the artist (Billups) one penny!
THUS, the only way Billups can be paid for the creation of this book
is by selling the few copies she has been able to find, from her web site!

Very limited copies available!!!!

QUOTE FROM INTERNATIONAL BOOK CLUB:

ATTENTION OIL PAINTERS!

Bring Home the Romance of Plein Air Painting!

When Billups inquired as to when she would receive royalties
for the sales of this book, the Publisher
(International Artist Publishing, Inc.
refused to pay any royalty commissions to her, and then quite printing it. Billups spent over 5 months, painting, documenting and writing
this wonderful publication, which has 8 pages of instruction, to each
of the 10 paintings published. She explains WHY she did what she did,
for color, value, design, etc.

These ten gorgeous landscape projects are designed
to be practiced indoors.
Once you feel comfortable with the fundamentals (simplifying shapes,
mastering tonal values, understanding light, color relationships, etc.)
you can venture outside to create your own oil landscapes
in a loose, Impressionistic style.

FYI:

Back before 1982, no gallery in the western states,
from California, to Arizona, to New Mexico, to Colorado,
would handle any art that was NOT PHOTOGRAPHICALLY TIGHT!
EVERY gallery that Billups visited,
she received the same rejection, for the same reason!

Then around 1982, there was a MAJOR Impressionist show, called
A DAY IN THE COUNTRY
that traveled to all the major museums, starting in California,
and ending in NYC. By the time this collection of art
(the art was borrowed from European Museums and private collections)
was returned to the European owners,
it appeared almost EVERY artist in the USA wanted to paint looser!

Then Billups work got lost in the masses!!!

HOWEVER, to know a person's true "heart" & "Passion":
do they stick to it even when no one notices,
and there is next to no income, from their creations?

Billups has continued to create, both plein air,
and studio work (her "Women in White" series)...
be there financial support or not!

Painting clouds "en plein air" can be a real challenge...one must be ready to change one's choices, both for shape and value, and time of day!!

In 1990 I received a commission to do a 10x6 foot mural of clouds. That spring I did over 10 16x20 cloud "studies"...never really finding the "right" cloud formation to be redone 10 feet tall! So, I took the best of each painting, and created the commissioned mural!

You might want to share this info with friends. As an artist I designed it, and also my web site, so that any one, any where on the face of the earth, can get a great "workshop" and improve their knowledge on creating strong, powerful paintings. "Copying" any one else's art, should ONLY BE FOR THE REASON: TO LEARN!! Throughout the history of mankind, students have "studied" art, thru their teachers' eyes! AND, to be a COMPLETE artist, they eventually broke away...and so should you. If you do not, you will merely be a "second hand" artist...you need to FIND YOUR OWN SOUL in expression...but, workshops, such as this one, is to give you a "vocabulary" of knowledge, of "how to", "why" and "when"...the final expression needs to COME FROM YOUR HEART!!!

As with all the other paintings on my web site...initially I chose the images I did, because I DID NOT KNOW the answer, to the visual! This piece, created in San Juan Capistrano, the building was a white building...and our minds like to force us to paint WHITE...but...in painting, you really only have 10 values to work with...black to white...that is DARK to LIGHT...and to create this ILLUSION, we have to know how to use the limits of our paint, to create the illusion!!! Really simple...but NOT simple to wrap your head around!!!

In the town of Sandpoint, a by-pass was scheduled to be put in, which would take this bank of trees out, for over a mile! I did something totally different on this painting: I did a 48x72 inch painting, on hands and knees. Months later, I created this 16x20, using the larger painting!

The way I think about it: do whatever works! BUT always paint from your HEART!!

And of course a plein air painting, just as the sky was loosing it's day light! This was created in Palm Springs, was an 18x24 plein air piece...if you notice, NOTHING in the landscape is as light as the sky!!! Remember, you only have 10 values to capture 1000 values of real light!!!

My book, is out of print...but you can purchase it from this web site...and doing so, you will also receive 2 full critiques, on paintings that you work on, from the book. If you want to continue, we can discuss charges at that time...sure beats the high workshop charges, with travel, etc.

BUT whatever, and however you decide to study:

KEEP THE PASSION,
let NO one take that from you!

WORKSHOP VIA EMAIL!!

If you are sincere about studying painting,
particularly plein air painting,
and would like art principles shared in this book,
please feel free to email the artist:
