My series of Women in White was inspired in the late '80s when I was commissioned to do several paintings for The Marriott Hotels, both in Colorado Springs CO and in Providence RI.
I had so many photo reference left after the commission, I decided to add to them with geese, gardens, etc. And thus began what I share with you on this site.
This piece, done in triptycht, was a challenge, in that I did not want to just reproduce the "same thing" three times. If you notice, not one background is the same, value or color relationship to the figure it embraces. Yet, they had to be believeable, in that they "exist" at the same moment in time. Not an easy accomplishment.
When I look back at this piece, like many other successful pieces, I cannot recall anything about it! From the color of the whites in each dress, to the edge control, or over all statement...
Whatever it is that I accomplish in my paintings, there are two levels: The first is the KNOWLEDGE one must glean in order to express oneself in any form: be it poetry, dance, music, architecture, sports, etc. The second cannot be taught. And that is because it is natural in each of us! That "something" only expresses itself when we KNOW it is there, and then get out of its way...so it can be expressed! It is what Og Mandino's character Simon Potter expressed as being "The Right Hand of God". If you want to know more, go read his books!!
