Back in 1975 when I was offered a commission from the U.S. Army
to create a painting on Sacajawea, I knew absolutely nothing about Lewis and Clark,
and "the mountain men" that followed them (and also who were in the mountains, long before.)
In 1979 I happened to find out about a "mountain man rendezvous"
that was being held in Fort Bridger, WY...When I got there, I was a bit disappointed...
for I could see the interstate from where the encampment was held!
I was a bit disillusioned, but what I experienced, got under my skin!
In future encampments almost all of them were so remote,
that without a map, it was almost impossible to find them.(cont.)
