Many times artists and collectors alike will term "studies" as something inferior to a "painting." For myself, my definitions are a little different:
EVERYTHING I paint, begins as a "study", not matter the size! That is, I want to "study" how colors affect one another. Or "how" a lopsided composition (ex.: Lilacs & Peonies) can be saved by merely adding a shape! Or how to simplify shapes and values to create unity, as in this painting... with values, and a family of colors that reflect the others in a single piece, as in this "study."
