As the sun lowered in the sky, the colors got deeper and more intense.
Since more was happening in the water at this point, I raised my horizon,
and put less emphasis on the sky.
You have to realize, that in LIFE we have values ranging from "0" (pitch black)
to 1000+ (looking into the sun on a clear day).
Well, artists have just their OPAQUE pigment
to create this illusion...our values go between 0 and 10!
So, in order to give the illusion of light,
and still have color in our lightest area (in this case the sun),
the area surrounding this area (the sun) has to not only drop down in value,
but also become less pure, or have less chroma...that is, become grayer...
so that now the sun has the highest value and cleanest chroma.
HOWEVER, each area must still be the BEST, most saturated color it can be for the job...
merely adding white or black to an area does not create anything.
As the saying goes:
A professional is someone who makes something very difficult, look very easy!
